چکیده

Short light pulses can be generated by interferometer systems commonly used as all optical switches in telecommunication applications. The method of pulse generation does not involve lasing and transforms an optical square-wave input with slow rise times into a short-pulse train. A mathematical model for the system is developed. Conditions for correct operation of the system are derived from the model. Simulations illustrate the system operation. Furthermore, initial experiments are performed using a combination of fiber and free space optics. The experiments demonstrate the controllable pulse width and obtain pulsewidths of down to approximately 1 ps.

Energy limits imposed by two-photon absorption for pulse amplification in high-power semiconductor optical amplifiers.

We study the combined effects of dynamic gain saturation and two-photon absorption on the amplification of short pulses in semiconductor optical amplifiers and show that two-photon absorption can saturate the amplifier gain and limit the output pulse energies even for amplifiers with large gain saturation energies. We discuss the upper limits for the pulse energies obtainable from semiconductor...

Mach - Zehnder interferometer based all optical flip - flop

For the first time an all optical flip-flop is demonstrated based on two coupled Mach-Zehnder interferometers which contain semiconductor optical amplifiers in their arms. The flip-flop operation is discussed and it is demonstrated using commercially available fiber pigtailed devices. Being based on Mach-Zehnder interferometers, the flip-flop has potential for very high speed operation. E-mail:...
